That's So Basic: 15 Casual Outfits On Repeat

What do your 15 most-repeated outfits look like? Have you ever thought about it? I put a list together for my own closet and guys... I think I might be basic. (No shame in that!) Seriously though, these aren't the most exciting outfits I've ever posted, but they are truly what I "throw on" as I'm headed out the door!

(ps. This is my "cold weather" version of casual. The two sleeveless outfits pictured, I wear with a jacket.)

If you've ever seen me, then you've seen me wearing this kimono.

A really old top remixed, so easy to throw on!

I basically don't pack a suitcase without packing this striped top.

Statement pieces like this jacket do all the work; they make the outfit.

A recent addition, but already on repeat with a suede moto or denim jacket.

I was wearing the band jacket (two photos above) so much, I added this secondhand jacket to my closet recently.

It was colder than usual this winter, so I wore this at least 20 times.

Last fall it was on repeat, and will be again this spring.

Sometimes I go super-feminine for casual looks and this combo got tons of wear.

Most-repeated outfit, 3 years running.

For all those days when I wear workout clothes and don't go to the gym.

This jacket/tee combo with sneakers = no brainer.

These jeans are in every load of whites I ever do. This combo in particular is clutch.

Another version of ladylike with jeans, this time with a pop of color.

I just spent a week straight in this outfit while traveling. So comfy!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Real Life Work Attire

I wore this a couple months ago to speak at a conference for Full Sail University students. Work attire always presents a bit of a conundrum for me: how much personality is too much personality? Because I love wearing bright colors, prints and big necklaces. (Or in this case, all three at the same time!) This outfit felt like a good balance between fun and serious. The shape says office, but the details keep it interesting!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Pink and Purple Outfit

It's the color combo that (for me) never gets old: pink and purple! Perhaps I had Easter and all that pastel yumminess on my mind, because all of these items are old. Suddenly, I felt inspired to put them together! This would've made a great Easter outfit, but we are visiting family in Kansas and Arkansas this year and (as you may know) it's about 40 degrees, so I needed something much warmer. Which means I'll be busting this out for a regular Sunday or baby shower or something very soon. I can't wait to wear it!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Grown-Up Lemon Print

I posted the "bananas" outfit (on left) a couple weeks ago, and today's look is the decidedly more grown-up version! It's still a fun yellow fruit print that screams summer and is as cute as a button, but today's look would work for errands, church, or possibly even the office. It's proof that even when an outfit doesn't work for you as-is, with a little imagination you can take the basic idea and make it fit your lifestyle!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Reinventing The Wheel

When the seasons are changin' one of the easiest wardrobe tricks is to adapt your favorite winter outfits for the warmer weather. I wear this long sleeve leopard top on repeat, so I thought why not try a sleeveless version I can wear as things heat up? I'm also rocking the new black dress pants I mentioned in this post. It's a simple look and yet so much fun - no need to reinvent the wheel after all!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Goodbye Winter?

Goodbye winter [question mark] - because is it ever really going away?! I think we are all wondering. I was actually cold while shooting these photos (in Florida, at the end of March!). Not normal. I'm trying to make the most of it though, with one last trip around town in my favorite studded leather jacket. I've noticed that I tend to only wear this type of "edgy" look during fall/winter, and in the spring my style gets WAY more preppy and feminine. Am I the only one? Does your style change with the seasons, too?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The White Suit

Inspiration: Bloomingdale's

I've never been big on LBDs but white everything - that's my thing! I love white dresses, purses, shoes, shorts, and jeans. So it's no wonder that I wound up with a white "suit" in my closet - even if I purchased the blazer and pants completely separate and never intended to wear them this way. The catalog photo made me curious how well they could really work together and... I think we have a winner! I love how crisp and modern it feels, and not stuffy. Would you wear a white suit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Do These Outfits Hold Up 8-10 Years Later?

Ten years ago, I set a clothing budget to encourage myself to buy clothes I needed for work. I'll never forget walking into The Limited in Boston (where I lived at the time) and buying this top and skirt - it's one of the very first things I bought. I still like it and would wear it today, especially the navy skirt. Some things truly never go out of style!

Top: Limited, $25 (similar)
Skirt: Limited, $25 (similarsimilar)
Shoes: Banana Republic, $75 (similar, similar)
Purse: Marc Jacobs/Saks Off 5th purse, $225 (similar)
Necklace: old Stella & Dot (similarsimilar)
Approx. dates: Top, skirt and shoes are 10 years ago. Purse and necklace are 3 years ago.

Looking back through old photos, I was excited to wear this outfit again because it seemed so cute! But once it was on, I felt like a Girl Scout thanks to the ruffle/tie detail on the top and overall color scheme. And the skirt looks terrible in the recent photos (not sure why it looks so much better on the left?!). The military/safari trend will always be a classic to me, though, even if these particular pieces aren't looking so hot.

What do you think? Do these outfits still hold up 8-10 years later?

Top: Banana Republic, $20

Today's Everyday Fashion: The First Outfit I Ever Posted

The first outfit I ever posted, on Left (May 2010)

I  have no idea why my collar is popped, my shirt was gaping at the bust, and the image quality is terrible, but the elements - navy blazer, stripe button down, white jeans, cognac accessories - are all-stars in my closet, then and now. Interestingly, none of the pieces I'm wearing are the same today. I donated the too-small shirt and the destroyed shoes (I literally wore them to death), and I still have those jeans but I swear the rise is so low the zipper is .5 inches, so I opted for a more recent pair. This was so fun to go back and re-create; it's truly a classic look I will love forever!

Today's Everyday Fashion: That's Bananas

Not only are those literally bananas all over my shirt, but it is also slightly bananas that I'm posting this outfit. "Risk-taker." "Fearless." "Willing to try anything once." Yes, yes and yes. "Slightly bananas?" Maybe. These pants did not work out so great in person. While they do technically "fit", they are too cheaply made to get a passing grade from me. I'm not giving up quite yet - I ordered the first pair below. If they don't work with this top (or others I already own) I'm moving on to greener... um, bananas. ;-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Flamingo Stripe Tee

Ran an errand last week and popped into J.Crew Factory for a sec. Should've known I wouldn't leave empty-handed! I picked up this flamingo stripe tee for me, and some sweet flamingo shorts for the hubs - clearly there's a theme here. I'm loving flamingos for summer, and this top is even cuter and more colorful in person. (It's also TTS, I'm wearing the XS.) Excited for a flamingo-filled summer ahead!

Maybe I'm Failing, But I'm Not a Failure

If life is a series of highs (mountain tops) and lows (valleys), then I’ve been in a bit of a valley lately - one so deep that even when I squint I can’t quite make out the shape of the next summit through the dark. Have you ever been there?

My first two months of 2018 sounded like this: “I am failing. I’m a failure. I have nothing to offer the world. I am worthless.” (My thoughts are career-specific, and mostly pertaining to my book. This is also not healthy or my usual self-talk, see * at the bottom.) Along the way, I’ve learned five pretty powerful lessons about “valley seasons” that I want to share.

1.     Maybe I’m defining success wrong.

I haven't been following my own advice in this 2012 blog post. Because if I’m really honest, the approval of people + money is how I‘ve mostly been measuring the success of my career for the past couple years, and it’s got to stop. It’s not so much of an issue when those things are going great, but then what if those areas slump? Does feeling “successful” go then, too? I’ve been doing so much self-reflection on what I set out to accomplish in the beginning and what I want to accomplish now. Because “she had money and compliments” is not what I want my gravestone to say! And just because other people use certain barometers to measure your career success, doesn't mean you have to follow suit.

Getting your definition of success straight also helps you discover your next summit. A friend recently said, “I want to figure out my purpose and mission in life, but I need to be able to make money from it,” and I was like no! I understand you gotta pay your bills but you also can’t be thinking about money when you're thinking about purpose, you have to go mission-first. It can’t even be in your vocabulary! I nailed this when I first started blogging, partly due to the fact that making money from blogs wasn’t even a remote possibility yet (so convenient). But now in this season I need to (again) take my own advice and really focus on one, singular thing: “What keeps me up at night/do I want to change about the world?!” And then, “How do I change it?” Those questions lead to a new idea I’m really excited about, and guess what? I actually could see it making money someday. Money is not standing in the way between you and finding purpose with your career. But your thoughts about money are.

2.     Nobody can take away your past success.

In the valley season, I needed to remind myself that I woke up one morning in 2010 with a fire in my belly and I wanted to change the world. I wanted to make fashion journalism more inclusive in every way, but especially in terms of budgets and socioeconomic status. Growing up, fashion felt off-limits for “someone like me," so I wanted to champion style content that was inclusive and down-to-earth – written by and for the everyday woman. And you know what? On that definition of success, I freaking rocked it!! The world has changed SO much since 2010. Budget fashion is now less embarrassment and more bragging right, even celebrities take pride in their high-low mixing. There are thousands of amazing budget fashion blogs now – a good number (in the hundreds!) who have told me over the years were inspired by J’s Everyday Fashion. I absolutely did not start or champion this budget-fashion revolution by myself (no one person ever does), but I’ve realized that I need to come into my power as a woman and entrepreneur and OWN my success and my impact on the world. Doing so will make a huge difference my own future, which will in turn impact others, creating a ripple effect.

I also made a list of things I did over the last eight years – not accomplishments like awards, but decisions made, and ways in which I stuck to my mission statement and did not take the easy route. Ways in which I actually had some control, because it’s so easy to write off my own success or the success of others as simply fate and luck. I found it so helpful to review the past to remind myself, nobody can ever take those things away! I don’t think it’s good to dwell there forever. I don’t want to live in the past, and cling to something I once did. But in those painful moments, it certainly helped to see what was already done, because I started to see how someone with my story could have a bright future.

3.     I’m in the middle of my story, not the end.

One of the biggest lies you’ll hear in the valley is “Might as well pack up and go home because it’s all over for you.” Um, excuse me! I was not put on this earth to just give up and sit in a corner. (And neither were you!) Maybe one phase of my career is ending or something in one category is not going well, but I also have value, I have purpose, and I have SO much more left to do. I am very much in the middle and not the end. It’s almost 6-months post-launch and my book is not even close to a passing grade in terms of sales (the people that have read it, have incredibly lovely things to say about it though; also worth mentioning that I had incorrect info about how book sales were doing the day I wrote this post because I sound delusional looking back). Why is it doing so badly? The most simple answer is that the cover and title are possibly communicating a different topic than what the book is actually about. (Which is kind of a problem!) The more complicated answer is that I may have self-sabotaged. I certainly didn’t do it on purpose, and ultimately my publisher had final say over the cover, but then again I was too passive about it. I’ve talked extensively about how much fear I had around releasing this book, and it would just be so much better for me if people didn’t understand what it was about, and I could just hide safely in my corner. Coming out with a book that’s essentially saying "religion gets beauty so wrong – it's shaming, it’s legalistic, and that approach is Biblically incorrect” is a bit bold. Especially when my faith is literally the center of my life and the “vows” and rules we learn in childhood are difficult to re-write, even if they seem incorrect to us now. There’s still so much time to turn it around, though! And even if it never, ever turns around I’ll still be okay because…

4.     Maybe I'm failing, but I’m not a failure.

Even if your whole world is a mess. Let’s imagine a person who is filing for bankruptcy, getting a divorce, lost their job, and estranged from their kids. Would you really label them as a failure? I wouldn’t. For starters they are still in the middle of their story so it would be tough to label anything that soon – what if they are actually resilient, hard-working and brilliant and they’re about to turn it all around? Too early to assign “failure.” The optics from the outside do not always reflect reality, and how you handle it says more than what actually happens to you. Most importantly though, we have so much intrinsic value as humans that simply can’t be erased by our circumstances, no matter what they are. The Declaration of Independence states that we are all created equal, and I think that means no matter what we look like and who we are, but also, our circumstances! Knowing and understanding the value that my own life holds, and that all lives intrinsically hold, is such a game-changer for me. Separating our circumstances from our physical selves is so important. Because the sum of the problems is not the sum of the person.

5.     There’s purpose even in the valley.

I’ve been asking, “Why am I in the valley?” and there are so many reasons. To deal with my own sin, to be humbled, to learn and grow. Even practical things like a change in my attitude about my own book and really getting fired up about the mission behind it, and getting motivated to take action about it. I'm glad it happened, and it wouldn't have happened without a "valley season." This initial negative reaction women are having to “fashion and faith” as a topic - there seems to be an automatic assumption that it's about shame/condemnation versus grace/freedom - also proves the need for the book in a very real way. There's just so much good stuff that's coming out of this (albeit frustrating) time.

Moral of the story: you’re exactly where you need to be. Don’t fight the process. There’s so much good stuff in the valley. So much to learn, so much to digest, so much that you need to take with you into the future. The next mountain top will come into view soon enough. For now, “Maybe you're failing, but you're not a failure.” You have so much more to offer the world. The next summit is just around the bend.

*This is not my usual head talk and I do think some actual depression was at play. I’ve always struggled with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and while living in Florida it doesn’t usually affect me much, this winter was legit 10x darker and colder than usual. If you think you are suffering from depression please check out more info here.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Try Two, Buy Two

inspiration: Neiman Marcus

Have you ever ordered two things for comparison and then wound up keeping both?! Yep, I did that. Sorry not sorry. Because both of these dresses were too cute to pass up (below), especially for the price! I figured that at least I could accessorize them differently - today's dress has a boho vibe with booties and a denim jacket. And the other dress is more polished with blush heels and a delicate purse. I'm loving both for easy outfits to throw on! Which one is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Print Mixing At Work

I like pushing the envelope with work attire: bright colors, statement jewelry, print mixing. (I think it adds a little pep to the work day!) How does one (hypothetically) prevent it from going too far, though? I think the color palette is everything - and this dark navy color is making it possible to mix three prints plus add a large necklace. Even with all that detail, it feels (fairly) subdued to me, simply because everything is so neutral. What prints could you mix in your closet this week to give them a fresh spin for work?

Today's Everyday Fashion: My Instagram Husband Made Me Do It

[it was raining!]

A couple days before we drove down to Ft. Lauderdale, Joshua showed me pictures of this mural in West Palm and insisted we stop and take photos there. I have to say, he was right - what a fun mural (it's by well-known Brazilian street artist Kobra) and I love these pictures!! It's such an #InstagramHusband stereotype that the woman is the one dragging the man around to take pictures, and I love that he really gets into it sometimes. Today's post was all him! :-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Finding My Voice (in the Prettiest Dress!)

"Is it just me, or did that go really well?" I had just finished speaking at a Ft. Lauderdale bloggers event over the weekend and wondered what my husband thought. He agreed. Because something felt... different. Something had shifted. My word for 2018 is "roar." For the past 5-6 years I've been at a tiny little kitten squeak level, and I want to find my voice again this year, and push through my anxiety about the "danger" of having an opinion and sharing it. That voice made an appearance this weekend in full force, for the first time in so long. Now, the real challenge: continuing to use that voice at speaking engagements and in blog posts in the coming months. Today's look: we snapped these pics in West Palm Beach immediately following the event, and well... I love this outfit! The dress was an amazing secondhand find, and pink and purple is my all-time favorite color combo. Loving this feminine mix!

Today's Everyday Fashion: My Jackie O Moment

Not sure how Jackie O would feel about the rest of my outfit, but this jacket sure does remind me of her amazing style! I've always had a thing for proper little jackets, but this mustard one takes the cake, and getting it secondhand for a steal doesn't hurt either. I've had this band jacket outfit on repeat a gazillion times this winter (same jeans and top, just a different jacket) so I'm happy to have another option to throw on. Planning to wear it to a work meeting next week!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Surprising Place I Find My Clothes

I find most of my clothes (drumroll please...) right here on the blog! Probably not surprising at all. I regularly go back to the shopping collages (see example below) and buy things that caught my eye. The dress I'm wearing today was featured at one point, and I scooped it up when it was on promo last month. It's so pretty and feminine, and the fit is great (just had to add a little safety pin to close the top - every wrap dress I've ever worn needs one!). I wore it a couple weeks ago for playing tourist with out-of-town guests, and it's a definite contender as an Easter dress this year, too!

Fort Lauderdale Event This Saturday

I'm so excited to connect and talk blogging this weekend in Fort Lauderdale! This is a free event, you can go here to register, and read more info on The Blogger Union website. I would not be where I am today without the generosity of other women being vulnerable and sharing their stories and advice and I'm committed to paying it forward. Looking forward to connecting!

In other news... I'm honored to have been named one of thredUP's "30 Best Dressed in America." You can read the feature on Business Insider, or head to thredUP for more details. You can also shop everyone's virtual closet while you're there - 100% of the proceeds support Girls Inc. All but one of the items in my closet have already sold, but you can check it out here!
