Today's Everyday Fashion: Pineapple Print

I'm dreaming of summer weather in today's cutie patootie pineapple print. It's my favorite season to dress for, and it can't get here soon enough! I love that "throwing something on" in the summer means little breezy dresses like this one. I'd wear it for errands or lunch in the top photos, and for the beach in the last photo with hat, green bag and flip flops. I rounded up even more fruity options on a budget, below!

Dress: Forever 21, $20
Shoes: Forever 21, $28

Today's Everyday Fashion: Crop Tops Are [Blank]

Lemons, gingham, and little bows on the shoes?! Gah. I'm dying over this print mix. That's how I wound up in this outfit, because crop tops are not always my first choice. I tend to avoid clothing that spurs thoughts like: Am I spilling over in this? Has it migrated and is now showing something I don't want it to be showing? I loooove the look of a high waist short with crop top for summer because it's such a retro throwback. But if I'm being honest, it's not always the most comfy silhouette to wear. What's your take on crop tops and high waists?

Top: Forever 21, $10
Shorts: Ann Taylor, $28 (similar below)
Shoes: Forever 21, $28
Purse: Mud Pie c/o, $25
Earrings: My Stella & Dot
Sunglasses: Francesca's, $10 (similarsimilar, similar)
Approx. dates: Shorts are 2 years ago. Purse is 1 year ago. Shoes are recent. Top is new.

Today's Everyday Fashion: This $15 Shirt Is Too Good

I mean... bright blue gingham with ruffle sleeves?! I'm sold. Except, when I ordered it I wondered  "how great can it be for only $15?" (it was an easy return if it didn't work). But it's SO good in person. It didn't need to be ironed right out of the package, the fabric is that nice and thick. And it's work-friendly! It would go great with some dressy chinos, or with shorts for a picnic. In my humble opinion... it's too good!

Top: JCPenney, $15
Jeans: Express, $37 (similarsimilar)
Shoes: Forever 21, $28
Bag: Forever 21, $25 (similar below)
Earrings: Amazon c/o, $18 (fair tradesimilar)

Oh how I love Nordstrom – let me count the ways: free shipping both directions, a wide selection including exclusive brands and extended sizes, a loyalty program, and stellar customer service (buy online and pick up in-store, alterations and tailoring, styling services). When asked what retailer I trust the most, Nordstrom would definitely top the list. Especially as I get older, I want quality brands that will last, and Nordstrom has become a place I shop more and more frequently!

The jeans and blush shoes in today’s post are my own Nordstrom finds from last year (still in stock). And then I selected a few more items to try from their website for a wide variety of occasions – work, date night, and casual weekend. My favorite find is the floral maxi. I can’t wait to wear it for date night with the hubs, and for an upcoming shower. But all of it’s super cute for different reasons!

Nordstrom is truly a one-stop, hi-low destination for all occasions. Is Nordstrom a top retailer for you, too?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Pink Suit

Inspiration: Tibi

Seriously, where was this pink suit when I needed it?! When I worked in an office, I would've jumped at a traditional suit in such a fun color. Nowadays, while I do still need professional clothes from time to time, I'm on the fence about whether I would wear it enough. (Probably more likely to repeat outfits such as this, this or this?) I'm definitely a fan of all the colorful suits retailers are offering now (see below) and think they are great for the office. Would you ever wear a colorful suit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: 21 Was A Long Time Ago

Twenty-one may have been a long time ago for me, but I'm still totally okay with shopping at Forever 21. Because... how cute is this jumpsuit?! And a lot has changed over the years. For example, this jumpsuit is an independent brand (not a Forever 21-branded item). It comes in sizes S through 3X. And Forever 21 takes returns in their store now (for a full refund, not store credit), so shopping online is relatively hassle-free (note: some items are marked online return only). Which is how I wound up with this ah-dorable jumpsuit that's perfect for, well, pretty much any casual occasion. The color/pattern drew me initially, but the fit is so comfy, and the fabric and fun details sealed the deal!

Jumpsuit: Forever 21, $48 (plus)

Shoes: Dolce Vita, $50 (samesimilar)
Purse: boutique c/o, old

Today's Everyday Fashion: When Only A Sweatshirt Will Do

We had an unusually cold winter this year and after repeating the same boring black hoodie, black leggings and black sneakers for what felt like the hundredth time, I decided to look for something a little more fun. Because sometimes, only a sweatshirt will do. A t-shirt just doesn't hug you in the same way, and a sweater can be scratchy, but a sweatshirt is the epitome of comfort. I styled my new "fun" sweatshirt for two different weather situations, and I rounded up even more options below. What brands or tricks do you use to make athleisure more fun - unique colors, prints, shapes?

Sweatshirt: Puma c/o JCPenney, $28 (old gift card)
Leggings: Yummie c/o (similar)
Sneakers: Nike/Kohl's, $58 (same)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Can't Believe I'm Saying This

Inspiration: DVF via Gilt.com

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think fit/shape might matter more than color?! I used to shop almost exclusively by color. I didn't care if things even fit me, I just wanted specific colors (paints in my style palette!) to wear together. Fast forward to today, and this top gets a "fail" solely because of fit. (I purchased while in a rush without trying it on, so back it goes...) Perhaps if the pants were high-waisted that would give the shirt more shape? I so love this color combo, but the fit is falling flat. What do you think - is shape or color more important in an outfit?

Top: TJ Maxx, $17 (similar below)
Pants: LOFT, $42 (similarsimilarsimilar)
Shoes: Nine West c/o Amazon, $66
Earrings: Kendra Scott c/o NM, $55 (same)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Dress Pants Success (and One Fail)

Last month I declared a strong dislike for dress pants and then got to work trying to find a pair I could get excited about wearing. I kissed a lot of frogs, but I'm happy to report that it paid off. I found a great fit and bought two colors - the pink/purple tone pictured above, and black. No more choosing between "wearing something fun that I love" or "looking professional" - these pants are both!

Top: Saks Off Fifth, $30 (similarsimilarsimilarsimilar)
Pants: Express, $40 (also got them in black)
Shoes: Steve Madden c/o Nordstrom, old
Purse: Aldo/Amazon, $40 (similarsimilarsimilar)
Necklace: Stella & Dot (similar, similar, similar)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot
Approx. dates: Necklace is 3 year ago. Top and purse are 2 years ago. Shoes are 1 year ago. Pants are new.

And one fail...
The majority of dress pants I tried on didn't make the cut - including this pair, above. The rise is a little too high, the legs are a little too long (I have them cuffed here). These pants come in other colors here. ps. The orange is VERY vibrant in person! I tried (and passed) on those too. ;-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Trench Skirt

Whoever came up with the idea of a trench skirt is genius. We don't get a ton of trench coat weather in Florida, so here's a more breezy way of wearing one? Yes, please! I've already worn it as pictured once and have a feeling I'll be repeating often. I love the overall shape of this outfit, as well as all the fun details (buttons, belt, pockets) on the skirt. I had some success with additional items from the same online order, so I rounded them up below. It will be a couple weeks before they are included in an outfit post, so sharing now while they are still in stock!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Give Me All The Gingham

Inspiration: American Eagle

Feels so good to be up around after being sick all week, and this gingham top I've been saving was just the ticket. It will look great with white jeans or shorts this summer, but in the meantime, the inspiration photo gave me an idea for wearing it now. I'm loving how black booties and a western belt give it a little edgy vibe. I also ordered the blue ruffle sleeve top from JCPenney, below - a great "work friendly" option! Gingham is definitely my jam; please give me all the gingham this spring/summer!!

Top: Nordstrom, $30 (similar below)

6 Valentine's Dresses You'll Heart From Ever Pretty

Today’s post is brought to you by Ever Pretty. All clothing selections, opinions, and editorial decisions are solely my own.

Heart eye emoji times a million!! I am luh-ving the dresses in today’s post with Ever Pretty. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s, Galentine’s, or you have a wedding, baby shower, or fancy dinner coming up, I can’t recommend these 6 styles enough!

Ever Pretty is truly one of the best resources I’ve seen for finding the look for less. And it’s not one of those “too good to be true” type websites, either. The prices are amazing, the dresses are gorgeous in person, and the customer service is top-notch. Check out more posts I’ve done with them in the past here and here – many styles are still in stock and make great Valentine’s Day dresses, too!

(Note on sizing: Ever Pretty is similar to European sizing. Their smallest size 04 is comparable to a size 0, size 06 equals 2 and so on. Be sure to check out the size chart that accompanies each dress for more details, or feel free to ask me about any specific dress.)

Head on over to Ever Pretty for more dresses and use code jseverydayfash for an extra 35% off through 3/1/18. Also take 20% off gift cards through 2/14, no code required - makes a great Galentine's gift!

Help me decide: which dress is your favorite??

Today's Everyday Fashion: Is This Bubble Hem Too Much For Work?

Have you ever felt like you are "too much"?

Too loud, too talkative, too many accessories, too colorful... the list goes on. I feel this way a lot, especially about outfits. Which is strange, because I have zero interest in people staring at me. I just LOVE over-the-top style! What is it about my heart that wants more ruffle, more pattern, and a big 'ole bubble hem at the bottom of my skirt? If I worked in a creative office, I would for sure try to pull this off. Even knowing it would potentially present a faulty image to co-workers: Why is she so flashy? Why does she want everyone to stare? Well I don't, but I am, and I really don't know why I was made this way. It just makes me smile. And I hope it makes someone else smile, too. Have you ever felt like you are "too much"?

Today's Everyday Fashion: How Pinterest Changed The World

Inspiration: Pinterest

I posted my first-ever outfit re-creation in May 2010. (A pink blazer inspired by Whitney Port!) Unbeknownst to me, Pinterest was being conceptualized around the same time and would become a household name by 2012. One of my favorite things that Pinterest did for the world (besides just being a really cool place to collect and organize visual inspiration), is normalizing this idea of copying/DIY-ing whatever inspires you. I can remember getting so much flak in the beginning for being a copycat with my outfits. But I don't think that same social rule exists nearly as much now. Pinterest normalized the idea of doing craft projects, meals, outfits, based on what others are already doing. Which is something I clearly can't get enough of. I will happily use whatever ideas someone has for an outfit to save time and money on getting dressed. Today's Pinterest-inspired look with items already in my closet is the perfect example!

Today's Everyday Fashion: A Little Spring Preview

Inspiration: LOFT

"Plain white tops" are a staple in my closet, except... they never wind up being very plain! Often they have ruffles, but this top takes it to all new heights. I'll be wearing it with stripe midi skirts, pastel skirts and gingham shorts this spring/summer. For my first look (a little preview, if you will), I re-created a catalog photo, and paired it with khaki tones. Would not have been my first instinct, which is precisely why I love using catalog photos for all the ideas I wouldn't have thought of myself. Also, my skirt is old, but I'm loving the longer version below, may have to scoop it up!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Mixing Fun Fluff and Deep Thoughts

Inspiration: ASOS

Most days when I come here to blog, I prefer to keep it light. I'm all about fun "fashion fluff!" After 7 years and a couple thousand blog posts though, I really started to crave going deeper, and having a more meaningful conversation. Which lead to writing a book, as well as some more in-depth posts lately: why work attire really matters, wear what you wantfair trade vs. fast fashion, and an open letter to the woman wearing the $10,000 purse on Instagram. I've been loving your responses and hearing your stories! So I wanted to ask: with what regularity would you like to see these types of posts? And are there any issues or topics you would like to tackle? What scenarios or dilemmas hold you back most from enjoying getting dressed? (You can email me at <j at jseverydayfashion.com> if you prefer to talk privately!) I don't think I'll ever stop doing fluff - in fact, the thesis of my book is that we should feel totally okay with fluff, there's no need to explain ourselves or justify our actions - but I'd like to do some deeper posts, as well. Would love to hear your thoughts.

About today's look: can I get an amen and hallelujah for a fair trade outfit (top + skirt) that is actually fun and colorful?!! I've worn the top before, and the skirt is part of ASOS' Made In Kenya collection, which apparently has been a thing for awhile but I recently stumbled upon it. This is exactly what I was talking about in my fair trade post, in wanting to see more variety, color, and affordability from fair trade brands. I would wear this outfit for an event, or switch to a ruffle sleeve blouse to make it work appropriate!

An Open Letter To The Woman Wearing The $10,000 Purse on Instagram

I can’t believe I’m writing you this letter; I’m not usually this forthcoming. But there are some very important things I want to speak to your heart today, although it’s probably not what you are expecting.

Fifteen years ago this letter would’ve taken a very different tone. I was raised to be frugal, to waste nothing and to want not, to prioritize those in need before myself. Your $10,000 purse would’ve seemed superfluous to me, and I would’ve immediately written you off as shallow. When I was young I thought I knew it all, but time and experience have been a valiant instructor and what once seemed like a black and white case now seems ever-so-gray, with vast oceans in between. When I look at you now, I see:

My dear friend Amanda who inherited her grandmother’s Louis Vuitton purse. She misses her nana, and doesn’t want the purse go to waste, so she carried it to church the other day. And there were glances and whispers passed between members of her congregation who were no doubt experiencing some of those same feelings I described above.

A popular blogger whose success has made her millions, but whose guilt prevents her from dressing how she really wants. She purchased several thousand dollars of designer goods from a friend’s store recently, apologizing that she couldn’t post to social media, because it would upset her readers. “When I post anything over $200, people attack me,” she told my friend.

A successful businesswoman named Harriett who grew up poor and whose hard work earned her a salary she never dreamed of. And after decades of all work and no play, and millions donated to charity, she finally splurged on the one special gift she always wanted for herself: a designer purse.

I see these people when I see you, and I recognize:

I don’t know your heart. Unless your heart has magically morphed itself into the leather and metal object that swings from your arm, I can only see your purse. And so… it’s just not for me to judge.

I don't know your circumstances. What if your purse was a gift, or the result of diligent work? What if you donated a million to charity and only took $10,000 for yourself? How do I know under what pretenses or for what purpose you purchased it, or with what spirit you carry it? And so… it’s just not for me to judge.

There's already so much pressure. The world is full of hard edges and a maze of demands when it comes to a woman’s appearance. One extreme tries to entice us to sell our soul to obtain that $10,000 purse (or the plastic surgery, or the new outfit), but the other extreme is just as bad (shaming and cajoling you for buying it), and I prefer not to participate in either. What I’ve learned over the years is that one extreme doesn’t heal the other. You’ll never fix what you want to fix by repeating the same mistake. And there's so much healthy gray area to explore in between. And so… it’s just not for me to judge.

There’s another person I see in that photo that I haven’t mentioned yet, though: me.

I didn't have the money to buy your purse then, so looking back I wonder how much my feelings were about not being able to have it? I've chosen a road less traveled with the financial blessings of my adulthood; I just don't covet or buy designer things even though I can afford them now. Would I have made the same decisions then, though? I can't say for sure. Under different circumstances, maybe I would have or will someday purchase the same purse you did. And so... it's just not for me to judge.

I know what being judged feels like. And I discovered that no matter how responsible you are with clothes, no matter how budget-friendly, how much more $ you donate to charity, how much you stick to your values, you’ll still receive backlash. I've received hundreds of comments over the years: clothes horse, addicted to shopping, vain, narcissistic, not abiding by your faith. No clothing budget will ever be small enough, no purse cheap enough. There is no end to the rabbit hole. And so… it’s just not for me to judge.

I felt guilty about clothes for years, so maybe you feel a little guilty about your purse, too? If so, I want to reach out and hug you and tell you not to listen to the noise. I want to shout YOU DO YOU, girl. I know that guilt. And I know grace is the answer, because most of us are already guilting ourselves to some extent. And so… it’s just not for me to judge.

In closing, I want to propose a partnership among women. To stop the guilt and the shame about fashion altogether - from ourselves and from others, whether you’re wearing a $10,000 purse or a $10 purse. You can’t judge a book by its cover, and you certainly can’t judge a girl by her purse.

Fashion is serious business in many ways. Dress codes, social cues, nonverbal communication, the environment, finances, the workplace and body image are all so important. But at the end of the day, fashion is also meant to be marvelously fun. So my hope for all women, myself included, is to find a place of confidence and self-assurance that allows personal style to be authentically our own, unaffected by those around us, and ultimately, a source of great joy, with no strings attached. The world is your fashion oyster. And I hope you enjoy every last ounce of it.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Is This Dress Too Austin Powers?

I am the absolute worst at making decisions. This dress has been sitting in my closet for two weeks, and I can't decide if I like it!! Typically, if you're on the fence about something, then I'd say it's a "no." But it's the "maybes" that haunt me. Half the time, they wind up being my favorite thing in my closet! And the other half, I deeply regret it. The maybes are the WORST!! And this dress is a definite maybe. I keep trying it on with different accessories, asking my husband to weigh in, and finally thought photos would solve it, but NOPE. (Highly recommend having a friend snap a phone pic if you're unsure though, photos help a lot.) So now I'm asking your input: is this dress boho chic, or Austin Powers? How would you style it?

ps. Thanks for all the recommendations on dress pants last week! I've been doing some digging, and hit the jackpot of fun colors and shapes, see below. They are BOGO 50% off right now so I ordered four pairs - one, two, five and one!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Why Work Attire Really Matters

Inspiration: Gilt

The work theme continues this week, with an outfit certainly not intended for wallflowers! Which begs the question: when have we gone too far? When are we raising too many eyebrows? I'm not talking about differing opinions about what's in style this season, I mean when is wearing a bold outfit an actual threat to your job? Because beyond practicality and our own sartorial preferences, there is an additional layer of politics to consider when it comes to work attire. Research shows that women who wear makeup make higher salaries, for example. And I would argue that our clothes play a similar role. (And that wearing "too much" makeup in some cases could have the opposite result!) In general I don't like generalizations (see what I did there) but consider two scenarios:

A job that values innovation, creativity and the individuality likely values strong style statements.
A job that values adherence to rules and teamwork likely frowns upon strong style statements.

A job could value strong style statements because it shows you care about the details. You're thoughtful, creative, you go the extra mile, and you're confident enough to pull it off. A different job could see that same style statement as a distraction though. A waste of time on frivolous things and quite frankly... how did the clown escape the circus in those pants? :-) There is no wrong side, because every office is different. But what is our response? We can identify and be aware of which traits our employer values, and then decide (this part is important!) if and when we want to play along. I would argue that what we wear at work is unequivocally important, but it's also up to us what exactly we want to do about it. Perhaps you want to push the limits and make a case for thinking outside the box at your job, or perhaps it makes more sense to stay conservative for the longterm health of your career. How does fashion play out in your office or industry? Do you feel like personal style is embraced?
