What To Wear To A Wedding With Ever Pretty

We are proud to partner with Ever Pretty for today’s post. Sponsors are carefully selected in conjunction with our mission statement to bring you style content we think you’ll love! All opinions and editorial decisions are solely my own.

It’s the style question I hear more than any other: “What should I wear to an upcoming wedding?!” You (understandably) want to look your best, but you also don’t want to break the bank on an outfit you’ll probably only wear a couple times, and nobody wants to spend hours searching at the mall.

Which is exactly where Ever Pretty comes in! You could pay hundreds of dollars for a dress at a department store, or… you can order an amazing dress from Ever Pretty for under $60! It’s a no-brainer.  They have hundreds of trendy and classic formal and cocktail dresses in stock, and are an amazing resource for all your weddings and events. I styled four dresses under $60 for today’s post. I mean – how gorgeous are these dresses?! Which one is your favorite?

  1. Polka dot dress – formal or black tie optional. // This dress has such a Kate Spade vibe, but at a phenomenal price. And I wouldn’t worry one bit about the skirt being white for a wedding – the black polka dots totally negate any traditional “bridal” vibes!
  2.  Red dress – black tie.  // Va va voom! This dress is so classic and gorgeous! It comes in tons of colors and plenty of length to make it the perfect height. It’s a stunning option for your next event.
  3. Baby blue dress – cocktail. // This baby blue dress is a chameleon that will work for everything from a baby shower or daytime wedding with sandals, to a nighttime wedding with metallic accessories.
  4. Blush pink dress – cocktail or semiformal. // The blush pink dress also works well for lots of “in between” occasions, you could even wear it to church. And the pretty pink color is so flattering!

Head to Ever Pretty to check out their full selection!

Right now all Wedding Guest Dresses are 15% off (6/1-6/4). Plus use coupon code jseverydayfashion for 30% off your $30+ order*! (And pretty please send me a picture of what you order – I’d love to see what you get!)

ps. Special thanks to the Orlando Museum of Art, the location for this photo shoot!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Another Gingham Summer

Gingham is the gift that keeps on giving you guys. It was fabulous when it was retro, it was fabulous last summer and it's fabulous now! I originally wore this top and shorts combo last summer for our trip to Michigan (here). And it was the very first thing I threw on when we arrived in Havana last month. I'm loving all the gingham possibilities that this summer holds. Are you a fan of this retro print?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Tropical Style

I may have grown up surrounded by wheat fields in Kansas, 800 miles from the closest ocean, but a tropical climate has always been my favorite. I can almost feel the heat looking at these snaps from our recent trip to Havana. It was too humid to do anything to my hair other than let it air dry, and the weather called for a breezy romper in a palm print, and inspired some very colorful accessories colors and a refreshing pineapple drink on the beach (see my inspiration photo + how I first wore this romper three years ago below). Are you a tropical girl, too? What city personifies your favorite type of style?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Work Pants on Weekends

While we're on the subject of throwback fashion (see: yesterday's post on skorts), can we talk about that era - sometime around 2001 - when everybody wore black dress pants to "go out"?! I feel like it's all coming full circle, because dress pants are - once again - the new weekend pants. I snapped up this red pair recently and while I do plan to wear them with something office appropriate at some point, in the meantime I couldn't help but give them a spin with a tropical crop top for weekend. Moral of the story: don't let your high-waist dress pants go unused on weekends. They work great for casual occasions too!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Skorts Are Back

Ahhhh skorts, you guys. Remember these from the '90s?! Shorts that look like a skirt thanks to the extra flap in the front! They boast both the practicality of shorts and the dressiness of a skirt. Although it's really less about the shape that drew me to this particular outfit, and more about the print. I just LOVE the combination of bright fruit prints and polka dots. And this print looks great paired with two of my favorite colors - kelly green and bright yellow. Summer is calling and I'm ready to rock it!

Today's Everyday Fashion: White Jeans Try-On

I've been looking for white high-rise jeans for months - they were out of stock everywhere! I finally found two pairs online, so I ordered both to compare. They are so similar it's uncanny (esp. considering these are two different brands) but I'm declaring right jeans the winner. The pocket lining is beige instead of bright white (so they don't show through), they are a shorter length so no need to roll them up (I'm 5'7"), and the rise is about an inch lower, which looks like it's hitting me in a better spot. Do I sound like I'm a denim expert? Not even a little bit. Pictures tell a story that looking in a mirror doesn't, and it wasn't until I saw the photos that I really knew what's up. If you're trying on jeans, don't be afraid to ask someone to snap a couple photos for you, it helps so much!! (And ps. I ordered the same size in both, but the left jeans run a tad big, so size down if you're in between.)

Left jeans: Forever 21, $30
Right jeans: Old Navy, $30 (the winner!)
Top: Nordstrom Rack, $30
Shoes: Steve Madden/Nordstrom, $90
Purse: Mud Pie c/o, $13
Earrings: Amazon c/o, $8
Sunglasses: Francesca's, $10 (similar)
Approx. dates: Shoes, purse are 1 year ago. Earrings are recent. Top and jeans are new.

The winning pair:  Right jeans

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Pink Convertible

On our very last night, for the grand finale of our trip, we took a ride in a pink convertible. Not only did it make for beautiful photos - without a doubt some of our favorites we've ever taken together. But also, a romantic oceanside ride (see video below and get ready to gag), followed by a meal together that I will absolutely never forget!! I bought this pink dress for a friend's wedding last year (here), and loved wearing it again in Cuba. I'm always urging myself and others to "wear the good China" and this is the perfect example. Live your best life, pull out all the stops, wear that fancy dress, ride in that pink convertible with your husband at sunset, and embrace all the amazingness of the world around you!! There is so much beauty just waiting to be discovered!

Why Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress Is Both None of Your Business and Absolutely Your Business

Oh, the royal wedding. Maybe you watched, maybe you didn't, but you definitely saw what Meghan Markle (the bride) was wearing, right? Thousands of photos were posted within seconds so it was hard to miss. And just like that certain body part, everyone's got an opinion. From what I gather, many were negative: people didn't love her dress. I deduced this from the second wave of posts which were largely about how we should leave her alone and let her wear whatever she wants. Which I both wholeheartedly agree with and disagree with.

AP / ALEXI LUBOMIRSKI/KENSINGTON PALACE

Women are sometimes like a bucket of crabs. When you put crabs in a bucket you don't need a lid - they restrain themselves. When a woman (I mean crab...) starts to crawl out, the other crabs pull her back down, so nobody ever rises to the top. A lot of hating on a royal wedding dress can feel like that. I mean - what is the expected outcome for sharing our dislike? Should she time travel and change into something else? Find something that suits your own style instead of hers? And isn't this whole event about love and marriage and not really about what she was wearing anyway?

I'm definitely not into being negative about what someone is wearing. I'm all about freedom of expression - you do you - and embracing the "audacity to enjoy yourself" with personal style (aka the mission of this blog and also the thesis of my book).

But here's the thing. To be truly free as a woman and have freedom of expression, that also means having an opinion about style. "You do you" does not mean you are required to go around loving everything everyone wears, or faking like you do. What being free (also) means is having a constructive opinion and being welcome to share it.

For the past 5+ years, I've been a regular on Daytime - a syndicated morning show in Tampa. I've appeared in more Fashion Wrap segments than I can count. Our segment is a lot like Fashion Police, where we share our opinions on what celebrities are wearing (only nicer, lol). Over the years we've had viewers get upset with us for not liking outfits, so I've had a lot of time to think about this:

  1. A celebrity and your co-worker are not the same. In general we take the whole "you're in the public eye so I can say whatever I want to you" thing too far. But at the same time, celebrities on the red carpet are literally posing and being photographed for the purposes of their outfits to be shared and discussed in the media. Your co-workers and friends who did not ask for your opinion maybe shouldn't receive your unsolicited style thoughts, but your thoughts on a fashion blog, the red carpet or a largely publicized royal wedding - go nuts (please just keep #2 and #3 in mind).
  2. Consider where you are commenting. A private conversation at home or via group text about a wedding dress is not the same as using your influence and voice on social media, or saying it directly to that person. Your voice is powerful, no matter how many "followers" you have!
  3. You should have a voice about fashion, but how you use that voice is absolutely everything. Don't say anything about anyone's outfit you wouldn't want them to say about yours. Express your opinion, but ALWAYS leave room for the person wearing it to be correct, too. As in "This is my opinion, I would wouldn't wear it or I would change this, but you should also feel free to wear whatever makes you happy." Comments should focus on what the person is wearing and their style choices, not their physical body or traits they were born with. Comments should be constructive in nature and have actual value - like "try this instead" or "this would be better" - versus catty and offering nothing helpful, or are essentially tearing the person down. (And maybe as a general rule make sure you are praising at least five outfits for every one you dislike!)

AP / ALEXI LUBOMIRSKI/KENSINGTON PALACE

When we hold back too much, we are actually undercutting our dignity and power as females. Meghan Markle married into the royal family of her own free will. I would bet that as a successful actress, she already knows what it's like to be in the public eye, and some lighthearted opinions about what she is wearing are 1. literally nothing compared to gross things like the death threats she will get likely get as the family's first bi-racial, divorced spouse, 2. totally expected. I can't imagine she went into this wedding not knowing that her dress wouldn't please everyone (no dress could ever do that). She does not seem to me like a delicate flower who can't possibly hear that not everyone loved her dress, but rather a woman who is confident and empowered, so we should really start treating her that way

One important caveat and I'm opening Pandora's box here, but if you want the full scoop it's in my book. All of the above applies to opinions about what women are wearing save for for one important topic - modesty, or rather, any type of style criticism that is based in faith or religion. In those cases I think it would be better for everyone if we just keep our thoughts completely to ourselves, or at the very least limited to private one-on-one conversations. Cool? Cool.

What are your thoughts on style opinions? Is her dress any of our business?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Red Hot Havana

This outfit was a last-minute addition to my suitcase and I'm so glad I packed it! I get style inspiration from all sorts of places - magazines, catalogs, social media - but this particular look was inspired by Cuba itself. I spotted these old shorts in my drawer and thought they would be perfect with lots of red for colorful Havana. (See how I styled them with yellow and turquoise last year.) Sometimes all it takes to make something old feel new again is the motivation of a new event or place you're visiting!

Living Your Best Shoe Life With Koolaburra

We are proud to partner with Koolaburra for today’s post. Sponsors are carefully selected in conjunction with our mission statement to bring you style content we think you’ll love! All opinions and editorial decisions are solely my own.

If UGG is the seasoned vet in the shoe world, then Koolaburra is the hip up-and-coming newcomer! That's because Koolaburra, sister brand to UGG, evokes a fresh, effortless SoCal vibe at a lower price point. They are also comfortable, and incredibly well-made. But don't take my word for it!!

I'm wearing the Raychel in black with an all-white outfit for some beachside sightseeing in today's post, but these - or really any of the Koolaburra styles - would go well with so many different outfits. Any pair can be dressed up or down, day-to-night, for almost any occasion, for under $80 (* for most styles, including my own).  If you're not wearing Koolaburras yet, then you simply aren't living your best shoe life! 😉

Today's Everyday Fashion: Old Faithful

I've worn this skirt every year for the past 5 years and it never seems to get old. It's safe to say it's my favorite "night out" piece. I wore it to my bachelorette in Key West, for dinners and birthdays, and with the hubs in Havana (pictured). I wish I could bottle whatever formula tells you when something will become a staple piece like this skirt. I'm often wrong both directions - either thinking something new will be a staple and then it's not, or totally underestimating the loads of repeating in that item's future. I can't say for sure what skirts will make power moves in your closet but I rounded up some potential players below!!

Purse: Ann Taylor, $30 (similar, similar)

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Original Travel Blogger

Last summer someone brought my husband's great grandmother's travel journals to the family reunion. There were stacks and stacks of them - full of pictures of Europe and Africa, aboard the Queen Mary 2. It was amazingly vintage and glamorous and I remember thinking with such well kept records, "she's the original travel blogger!!" One of my favorite things about blogging is having a journal of all the cool places we've been. Whether it's right here in our backyard, or on the streets of Havana in today's post. And of course I hope the style is inspiring, too! I bought this yellow dress and purse specifically for our trip (last year, when our trip was originally scheduled, so they are sold out now). I remember being in the fitting room and wondering if this dress was a little too over-the-top, but I'm so glad I went for it!! It's so festive and tropical that I was literally twirling. For your next trip or event, go all out girl! Snap those pictures and keep those memories forever - and I will too!

Today's Everyday Fashion: All The Colorful Walls

If it looks like we spent hours tracking down the perfect walls and cars for this post I gotta tell you - Havana is really just this colorful! These pics were all taken within an hour, in the span of a few blocks, a short walk from the casa particular where we were staying! I also stumbled upon a vendor selling souvenirs, and immediately fell in love with this fan, so I added it to my outfit. (And now it sits on our travel wall, among the much-loved things we've collected from our trips.) Havana is a feast for the eyes and this stripe top with a slight retro vibe was a perfect fit - for both the weather and our surroundings!

Today's Everyday Fashion: 739 Clifford Drive

A friend of mine recently posted her latest interior design project and I thought - wouldn't that gorgeous house make a great photo shoot location?! She quickly agreed and we set up a date. Normally I love repeating outfits, but with such a spectacular backdrop I worried at first that I didn't have anything new to wear. Then I thought - why not repeat a couple old favorites and glamorize re-wearing budget finds simply by shooting them at a new location?? (Not to mention, mixing a $25 jumpsuit with a $1.3 million dollar house and a Bentley is a whole new level of mixing high-low!!) We had an absolute blast doing just that. My husband takes real estate photos from time to time, and I loved putting my own little twist on them. Huge thanks to Blue Daze Design and Clarkson Concepts for having us!! Today's Everyday Fashion: One Year In The Making

Posting this today feels like letting out a breath I've been holding for close to a year!! Because after buying this outfit last summer, our trip was canceled twice (once due to a passport fiasco, once because of hurricanes), and I kept it aside until we made it to Havana last week. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait!! It looks like it was tailor-made for this beautiful city. We didn't have to look far for the perfect backdrop - all of these photos were taken within just a few short blocks of each other. And I'm not sure what was more festive: my outfit, my feelings, or my surroundings. It was truly one of those afternoons where the outfit makes your day even more fun. (Btw, this kind of outfit fun is for absolutely everybody. Vacation photos are forever, and I can't recommend wearing the good china and having fun with your clothes while traveling enough!) This will forever be my Havana outfit and I loved every minute of it!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Tropical Polka Dots

What is it about polka dots?! They seem to never lose their luster. And they seem to be the ultimate foundation for whatever "look" you're going for. They can be super retro, ultra feminine, tropical - all depending on what you pair them with. I wore this polka dot dress (scored for $13 in the after-Christmas sales) to dinner one night on our Havana trip and it was an easy, breezy throw-on piece. And with sandals and colorful accessories it was perfectly themed to our island climate and colorful surroundings!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pink Palm Print in Cuba

Today we're kicking off a series of ten outfit posts we shot during our trip to Cuba!! We stayed eight days, seven nights in Havana and this will forever be one of our favorite trips - for so many reasons, as you'll soon see. Tourism has been closed to U.S. residents since the fall, but our journalism visa was still valid from when we originally scheduled this trip in August. We were so thankful we still got to take this trip!! And we hope you enjoy the photos and style inspiration over the next couple weeks. These are some of my favorite outfits I've ever worn. I love warm weather style and all things tropical and today's palm print pants and pink crop top are no exception. I wore this outfit once before our trip, and then again pictured here on our first full day. Lightweight pants like these are great for any island climate - they provide just enough breeze while still allowing you to feel put together in the heat. Not to mention the colors were so harmonious with our surroundings - that green car drove past at the exact right moment in the second-to-last photo! It was a great first day!

Swimwear Is Fun Again With Macy's

We are proud to partner with Macy’s and ShopStyle for today’s post. Sponsors are carefully selected in conjunction with our mission statement to bring you style content we think you’ll love! All opinions and editorial decisions are solely my own.

I can recall with vivid detail so many of the swimsuits I had as a kid – the color, the shape, the sheer joy of wearing them to the pool all summer long. This summer, I am feeling nostalgic and loving swimwear again thanks to the selection at Macy’s. I am truly blown away by all they have to offer, and I think you will be too!

In today’s post I’m wearing a tummy-control off-shoulder one piece by La Blanca in the cutest white floral print. One pieces are even more “in style” than two pieces this year, and with SO many cute ones to pick from, I thought why not give it a try?! I especially like how the ruffle off-shoulder shape works with a pair of denim shorts and this pink kimono to create a cute head-to-toe “look” for your next beach day.

Whether you prefer a one piece or bikini, solid or print, Macy’s has so much to choose from. My round-up of favorites below barely scratches the surface of the more than 2,000 options they have online. All that fun we had as a kid with swimwear? Yep, it’s happening again this summer at Macy’s!

Check it out here.
