Today's Everyday Fashion: What To Wear To A Holiday Office Party

The secret weapon for your next holiday office party? A sequin pencil skirt! Not just any sequins will do though - so many versions are super stretchy, and feel way more "club" than office. This sequin pencil skirt (and several of the options below) are loose-fitting, and are structured, not stretchy. The rest comes easy. Try pairing it with a silky crew neck blouse, add some sparkle with a statement necklace or earrings, and keep the rest pretty simple. Or, for a colder climate, try it with a turtleneck and tall suede boots!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Little Things

Inspiration: Jacquemus via Harper's Bazaar

Sometimes, it's the little things. A little red, white and blue ribbon pin that you bought online for $30 that has already created two amazing new outfits (using only old things) in your closet. (See the other one here.) And that little idea in a magazine photo that inspired you to add that same ribbon pin to a ruffled white shirt, which just happens to go perfectly with a stripe skirt from 7 years ago. The little ribbon pin and a little idea that sparked an even bigger one... sometimes, the little things are the best things!

Today's Everyday Fashion: #GivingTuesday

I love blogging about fashion, but it's definitely not my life's purpose. A career path, certainly. But things with deeper meaning like giving to and helping others, are things I think about more often, and are far more exciting than clothes! That's why I love the idea of #GivingTuesday, the day that falls after Cyber Monday and Black Friday. (I only wish that it came before Thanksgiving - giving first, THEN the shopping!) Today is a time to reflect, and strategize how we can give back:

1. TIME - Let's start with the one thing that absolutely anyone can contribute no matter your age or station in life: your time. Many nonprofits and charities could not function without a large amount of manpower. Take the Feeding Children Everywhere initiative we recently participated in - they sent 4.4 millions meals to Puerto Rico, which required the help of 54,000 volunteers! Does it feel like your schedule is too packed and there's no way you can help? Please hear me when I say that I understand that feeling. During our busiest season we work 120+ hours a week, and barely have time for self-care or socializing let alone volunteering. But Joshua and I recently spent a Saturday afternoon cooking for and serving a Thanksgiving meal for the homeless during an absolutely INSANE week, and it was magical. Volunteering is funny like that - when you are stressed to the MAX and have zero time is often the best time to do it!

2. SKILL - There's using your two hands and feet to volunteer (TIME) and then there's using your qualifications or (SKILL) to help others! Whatever your abilities may be, there are tons of exciting ways you can make a difference. A great resource for getting started is Taproot, a website that allows you to enter your skills, browse available projects, and apply to help pro bono. For me and Joshua, this is definitely one of our favorite ways to give back. It means sitting on the board of a nonprofit, donating consulting and/or social media services, or doing pro bono blog posts or photography sessions. We don't always share publicly, but a couple examples you've seen here on the blog include going to Haiti to establish best practices for a nonprofit/fair trade brand, and utilizing one of the unique perks of my job (free clothes!) by donating or doing closet sales for a cause.

3. MONEY - There's a saying, "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also," and I couldn't agree more. I feel proud knowing that anyone examining our checkbook would see how passionately we give (I only ever post about my clothing budget here, but we donate 4-8 times that amount to charity each month), and furthermore I'm WAY more excited to donate money, than I ever am about buying myself something. Giving time is important, but giving money is equally so. You can find tons of great fundraising events happening near you via the official #GivingTuesday website, or check out this Today Parents article: 7 ways to help children suffering in Syria's civil war. Or, in leu of Christmas gifts this year, why not consider helping a child in need, in a family or friend's honor? One site I recommend is COTN (Children of the Nations) - they provide you with a printable gift receipt to put under the tree.

4. LOVE - Time, skills, and money all take a bit of thoughtful planning, but as we go about our day we have the opportunity to give every moment of every day. We can give love! We can hold the door open for someone, cover the bill for the family in the grocery line in front of us, run errands for a new mom, or bake cookies for our neighbors. Two holidays ago I posted 20 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season - and I love re-reading it for tons of ways we can be giving back every day - not just during the holidays!

Which way do you enjoy giving back the most?
What's been your most rewarding volunteer experience?

Black Friday, Cyber Monday... ya'll already know I am not a fan of the "buy, buy, buy" pressure we often get from the media, and it can feel especially heavy on this weekend.  So hopefully a little outfit-inspo to re-use what's already in your closet will be just the ticket today, as well as a little Cyber Monday plug (on Instagram only) for thredUP - one of my favorite resources for being environmentally and budget-friendly with our clothes. Also, be sure to tune in tomorrow for a very special #GivingTuesday post!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Holiday Traditions

It's just not the holidays without (fill in the blank). For me, it's watching White Christmas, decorating the tree, enjoying as many cups of hot chocolate as possible, baking cookies for our neighbors, and... ice skating!! The hubs knows that every year this holiday tradition tops my list. In fact, after picking up this striped sweater a few weeks ago, I saved it to wear with a beanie and comfy jeans for our annual ice skating date. That's a look of pure joy on my face, already filled to the brim with Christmas spirit!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Dress for Success Event

The nighttime weather forecast finally dipped into the 50s here in Central Florida, which means... it's time to bust out the faux fur vests! We snapped these pictures on our way to a friend's birthday celebration over the weekend. I was inspired by the catalog photo to pair a simple v-neck top with high waist jeans, pumps and statement jewelry. And with a chill in the air, faux fur felt like not only the coziest but also most fun type of jacket to throw on. It was a great night!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Sleeves For Days

This is one of those tops that you can throw on and instantly feel "dressed." To be fair, I would die over anything this color pink with huge bell sleeves, but the fabric really takes it to the next level. It's machine wash, doesn't wrinkle, has slight stretch, feels like a fancy dress. And yet you could wear it with sneakers, dressed up or down with jeans, or with a skirt to work. Pretty much the only strike against it? Use some caution and maybe skip the marina sauce at lunch lest those "sleeves for days" wind up in your food!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Outfit Goals

#Outfitgoals because I wish my outfit could be this fun every single day! It checks all the boxes for me: a fun color, a stand out detail (in this case, structured sleeves) and it's super comfy. I've worn it to one occasion so far (a pre-holiday magazine party) and have no doubt I'll be wearing it for many more. Styled exactly like this, but also perhaps with some fun color combos for spring!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Change Your Inspiration

Inspiration: Harper's Bazaar

Let's be honest - I took some serious creative license here! I originally had on a button front denim skirt and black leather jacket just like my celebrity inspiration, but jeans and a leopard coat felt more practical for my lifestyle (it was too cold for bare legs the day we shot this!). Pretty much the only thing our outfits have in common now are the graphic tees and velvet shoes, and I'm totally okay with that. In fact, I like not exact-copying even better. I changed my inspiration and I encourage you guys to do the same. There are plenty of practical outfits to be found in things you don't like or don't work for you without some major adjustments!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Rainbow Carrie Bradshaw

Inspiration: SATC

Fifteen years later and this Carrie Bradshaw outfit is still one of my favorite style inspirations of all time! Her outfit was partly my motivation for purchasing this skirt 6 months ago, and now that cooler weather is finally upon us, I couldn't wait to re-create it with a pink top and red coat. I do like her proportions better (the shorter red jacket looks great) but I'll settle for a similar color combo that's already in my closet, even if the fit isn't quite perfect. It felt like my very own (look for less) Carrie Bradshaw moment, walking down the street in this rainbow outfit on a windy day!

My Holiday Boutique with Rue La La

Today’s post is brought to you by Rue La La and ShopStyle. All clothing selections, opinions, and editorial decisions are solely my own.

The holidays are in full swing and with so many wonderful things happening all at once – trimming the tree, shopping for gifts, spending quality time with family and friends – I’m taking one thing off your plate today: deciding what to wear for holiday gatherings! I’ve partnered with Rue La La to curate a holiday boutique just for you, that’s full of amazing deals on designer brands, for every occasion.

I’m wearing three dresses from the boutique in today’s post. Don’t make me pick a favorite, because I’m dy-ing over the Free People velvet trim dress with sleeves, red ruffles are the ultimate holiday go-to and never disappoint, and the strap details on the navy and black Haute Rogue dress are so unique and pretty. This was my first time shopping Rue La La and I’m seriously impressed – I’ve never seen prices this low on the brands they sell, and it's free and easy to sign up as a member.

Head over to my curated boutique to shop, and see more below!

Today's Everyday Fashion: NYC Recap

Inspiration: Harper's Bazaar

If I look a little less than chipper in today's photos it's because I was SO cold, you guys!! This is the last outfit we shot during our trip to NYC (see full recap below), and it was such a blustery day that I only had it on long enough to snap a couple photos (< 10 minutes, I am such a Floridian). My shirt was riding up much higher than I realized, probably due to the fact that my entire body was numb from the cold, but I still love this supermodel-inspired idea for a day in NYC. It's simple and chic and details like the gold buttons, ornate belt and buckle boots make it so fun. Would you wear a navy and black look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pink Jeans Holiday

Inspiration: Anthropologie

I try all kinds of crazy outfit combinations in my closet - many which never see the light of day, or get posted here. My first instinct with today's look is that is was unrealistic and I shouldn't post it - I mean what weather calls for a fuzzy hat, but then bare shoulders and peep toes, right?! Except, I think, that's the appeal of any off-shoulder sweater: the juxtaposition of cozy + bits of skin showing next to one another. Also, this is literally how we do holiday here in Florida! I would wear this to an outdoor holiday party at someone's house in a heartbeat. The fuzzy hat and sequin purse are so festive, but then it's also weather appropriate (plus you could easily switch to closed-toed boots and add a coat if it's really cold). I'm glad I gave pink jeans for the holidays a try, it may just be my new favorite thing!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Ribbon Pin

Inspiration: GUCCI One, Two, Three

Has a style item ever reminded you of something, but then you couldn't place what it was? That's me with this ribbon pin I spotted on Nordstrom.com; I knew it felt familiar, and that I really liked it. I connected the dots later that it's an uncanny match to the trim that Gucci uses on many of their current items. It's truly a designer look for a less, and I'm all about it! This $29 ribbon pin can be clipped or pinned on, and instantly spruces up old items I've had for years. Don't you love when an accessory packs so much punch and has the ability to make an old outfit look new?!

The Genius Way to Get Your Holiday Dresses For Less

Today’s post is brought to you by thredUP. All clothing selections, opinions, and editorial decisions are solely my own.

Parker dress

Tobi dress

David Meister dress

Trina Turk dress

The holidays always present quite the style predicament: there are so many occasions for party dresses, but they are expensive and only get worn once, condemned to sit in your closet the rest of the year. What’s a girl to do? Enter one of my favorite resources – thredUP, the world’s largest online thrift store, and an amazing place to get your holiday dresses for less!

Even if secondhand is not usually your thing, consider how well it works for the holidays. Many dresses listed are NWT (new with tags), but also they are often only worn for a few hours and then never worn again, so it makes so much sense. Why not get your holiday dresses from a rotating closet shared with several thousand of your closest girlfriends?! It’s such a genius way to save money.

I gave it a try this holiday season, and I’m sharing eight amazing dresses I found on thredUP in today’s post. It’s easy to shop, easy to order, tons of selection from your favorite brands, and if it doesn’t fit, returns are easy, too. Plus right now thredUP is offering a special discount: the first 100 people to use code JEVERYDAY will get an extra 40% off their first order! (Applies to new US customers only, certain restrictions apply. Redeemable online only.)

Here’s what I got:

1. Parker dress $60.99 (originally $297)
2. Tobi dress $23.99 (originally $119)
3. David Meister dress $60.99 (originally $568)
4. Trina Turk dress $74.99 (originally $378)
5. Windsor dress $9.99 (originally $45)
6. Scala dress $44.99 (originally $225)
7. Kate Spade dress $80.99 (originally $478)
8. Mustard Seed dress $9.99 (originally $45)

That’s eight dresses for $366.92, for a total savings of $1,788. (That’s crazy!)

Why buy one expensive dress this holiday season when you can buy multiples dresses for the same price at thredUP? (Not to mention it’s so healthy for the environment!)

Which dress is your favorite?!

The way the leaves turn magnificent shades of yellow and orange in the fall has got to be one of the prettiest sights on the planet. Central Park is already a magical place, but this time of year it has an extra twinkle to it, and I'm so glad I got to experience it with the hubs. (We've both been to NYC many times but this was our first trip together!) The temperature went from tank top weather to bitter cold while we were in town, and on this particular day it was freezing. I was glad to have packed this celeb-inspired outfit - a yellow wool coat purchased secondhand last year, leopard print, and super comfy ankle boots. I layered a bomber jacket under the coat for extra warmth, and the only thing missing? Mittens for my cold hands!
